THE ARTIST'S MODEL
She didn't blink enough. That was the first thing I noticed when she hired me to paint her. She sat on the velvet chaise in her apartment and she could hold a pose for hours without twitching a muscle. Most models get restless. They need breaks. They need to stretch. She was like a statue carved out of marble. Pale and still and terrifyingly beautiful. I was trying to mix the right shade of grey for her eyes and my hand was shaking. She noticed. She asked if I was nervous. I told her the room was cold. She laughed. It was a dry sound.
She stood up and walked over to where I was standing at the easel. She was taller than me. She wore this silk robe that looked like it cost more than my entire tuition. She looked at the painting and then she looked at me. She asked if I wanted to see the real thing. She dropped the robe. Her body was flawless. No scars. No blemishes. Just smooth white skin.
