The Gods of Being Human trilogy begins with Book I, The Mists of Olume. This first story focuses on introducing dominant characters of the books. Character development in Book I is paramount to the trilogy storyline.
Maglen was an amazing leader of warriors and hero at a young age. The tolls of war tainted the man. After the Freedom Wars, he ran from his past. The tragedies of war made him bitter, bigoted, and obnoxiously arrogant to an extreme.
Summoned by his emperor, Maglen is encouraged to lead an important expedition. The expedition is an urgent quest to find the legendary continent of Olume. Skeptical and reticent, Maglen crassly argues the viability and value of the journey. Well, he argues until his ego gets a bitter taste of humility.
Emperor Riklen demands Maglen conquer his shortcomings as a person. He is also required to upgrade his inadequate magical skills. There is a hitch. Maglen's proclivity has always been for blades.
Maglen knows he must recapture the purer motivations and optimism from his past. That will be crucial for him, and the expedition, to succeed. This effort requires help from cohorts Dro-Gar, Carlen, an ancient process of introspection, and more.
Mists includes the tedious process of preparing for their quest. Then, the challenges and risks of their shipboard odyssey arise. Later at sea, the crew and expedition are forced to test their commitment to the emperor’s venture.
