A quietly devastating literary mystery about family, mourning, hidden letters and the names left behind after a death.
At a coastal memorial for Helen Bowers, Mara Vale notices a small mistake.
The table cards are in the wrong order.
One guest has been placed where she should not be. Another name is missing. The welcome speech has been moved. Condolence cards have been hidden in a drawer. A letter appears and disappears from the writing room. Lilies arrive according to an order nobody admits to placing. And Noor Bell, a writer who barely knew Helen, has been invited for reasons no one can yet explain.
Mara has come to host a memorial. Instead, she begins to read the house.
Rooms, cards, envelopes, keys, notebooks, telephone calls, guest lists and silences begin to reveal the architecture of Helen’s final arrangements. Around Mara gather Lydia, Helen’s partner of thirty-one years; Celia, Helen’s wounded sister; Peter Ash, the man who carried one of Helen’s last letters; Mr Rusk, the careful keeper of documents; Ellen Price, who understands the discipline of the desk; and Noor Bell, whose presence turns the guest list into something more than etiquette.
As the weekend unfolds, Mara discovers that Helen did not leave one secret. She left a system of carefully distributed promises. No single person holds the truth. No single room contains it. To understand what Helen intended, Mara must learn which papers to open, which questions to delay, and which silences must be honoured before they can be broken.
Written with restraint, elegance and moral precision, The Last Guest List is a contemporary literary novel about inheritance, grief, chosen family, queer partnership, old wounds, memorial rituals and the quiet violence of being left outside the room where decisions are made.
Some names are not added to a list. They are placed there.
